With the people back in Jerusalem and the temple being rebuilt, the people start looking around for their Messiah. Joshua the High Priest and Zerubbabel son of David are perfect candidates. And God declares he will bring that fulfillment… if they are righteous. If the people obey. They don’t. The history of humanity and all the OT is a story of everyone trying every strategy to save themselves. You are a TERRIBLE Messiah. God says “I have the victory. Live in it.” He removes our filthy rags and gives us his spotless robes of righteousness.
